Life in the 1920s: Where history comes to life!
Village Historique de Val-Jalbert:
frozen in 1927, alive today
Located in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, the Val-Jalbert Historic Village carries the living memory of working-class Quebec. It was a company town, born around a mill, and silenced in 1927. Yet, remarkably, everything remains. Untouched.
Indeed, forty original buildings still stand: the convent-school, the post office, the general store, abandoned houses, and of course, the pulp mill. A 1920s-style trolleybus takes you through this preserved world. As you walk, you watch, you imagine. Every place whispers. Every wall remembers a forgotten name.

Ingenuity, resilience, legacy:
the breath of industry carved in stone
Village Historique de Val-Jalbert is not just a backdrop. It’s a living story. In fact, a $19.7 million revitalization project gave the site back its weight, its soul. The pulp mill — its foundation stone. All around it: the Ouiatchouan Falls, the cable car, the glass platform suspended in the spray. Altogether, it’s a world of its own.
The voices of early 20th-century workers still echo — through an immersive, raw, human performance. In the exhibits, technique meets emotion. The Men’s Hall. Hands in the Pulp. Models light up. The tools come back to life.
Finally, there’s La Dompe — strange, poetic, unexpected. Here, art rises from the place where discards once lay forgotten.
